Pioneering Morgantown School Celebrated After Battling for Education Freedom
MORGANTOWN, WV. Tomorrow, February 2nd, The Yass Prize for Sustainable, Transformational, Outstanding, and Permissionless Education visits its third state on the Roadshow for Opportunity with a stop to Morgantown, West Virginia. This event will take place at the campus of one of the 2023 Yass Prize Finalists, West Virginia Academy, the first school to forge the new pass of charter schooling in the Mountain State.
Soon after founding WVA, Founder Heidi Treu, a mother of seven herself, unexpectedly became the lead plaintiff in a union’s effort to shut them down soon after opening. The advocacy efforts from the WVA community played a crucial role in the state Supreme Court declaring the law Constitutional. Despite the creation of West Virginia’s Hope Scholarship program, WVA pioneered another innovation by giving parents access to education funds, enabling enrollment and qualification for an education savings account. Their unwavering commitment is evident in providing a transformative education for students that works to reverse the student statistics that plague West Virginia, including many students that live in foster care.
The event, open to the press, commences at 10:00 am with a tour and discussion about WVA’s groundbreaking model.
Janine Yass, founder of the Yass Prize, lawmakers, and nationally recognized education leaders will be in attendance.
This event is closed to the public. Media representatives interested in attending or interviewing participants should contact:
