Savannah Legacy Academy (SLA) is a K-8 hands-on learning school that grew out of the respected Ash Tree Organization, which has nurtured Savannah students for 17 years. In addition to offering this critically needed tuition-free choice to students, SLA provides after-school instruction in piano, voice, ballet, tap dance and martial arts and students participate in First Tee golf weekly, a sport which reinforces the same practices needed in school–patience, hard work and life lessons in success and failure. If SLA receives the million dollar Yass Prize, it will build a new facility to grow through 12th grade and construct a golf practice facility with a small driving range, indoor golf simulator, putting and chipping station and two playing holes. Golf will become a mandatory elective class, and students will be able to have all the sports other schools currently have as well as an expanded performing arts center.
