About
Old Sturbridge Academy (OSA) provides a unique, hands-on education model co-locating in a museum, Old Sturbridge Village. The charter school benefits from the resources of its campus – bringing students into the museum, and bringing the museum into the school. Targeting students from underperforming districts, OSA provides an alternative to traditional public education by exposing students to the rich cultural history of Massachusetts’ oldest and largest outdoor living history museum. At OSA, all students participate in experiential learning and have access to Village resources including a research library, a working farm, gardens, a 250-seat theater, a pottery shop and kiln, a woodworking studio, and several nature trails. OSA is a learning community where children are valued as individuals and are encouraged to find learning through real-world experiences and opportunities to imagine. In addition to expanding to nearby Worcester, with the $1 million Yass Prize OSA would work to replicate its model further regionally with more museums, including in Rhode Island, as well as codify its experiential learning activities for dissemination to local school districts.
