The Lutheran Urban Mission Initiative, LUMIN, is working to reshape education in underserved communities across Wisconsin. Its blended curriculum pairs traditional teaching with cutting-edge educational technology, teaching digital literacy and building strong academic foundations. LUMIN also provides comprehensive services addressing barriers to learning, from mental health support to nutrition programs and parental initiatives, nurturing not just the academic success, but the overall wellbeing of students and their families. Through its Opportunity Academy, LUMIN introduces students to various professions, sparking ambitions and preparing them for future careers. Winning the $1 million Yass Prize would allow LUMIN to expand in Wisconsin and beyond, and further equip students with essential skills, practical knowledge, career networks, and social capital. Efforts would center around creating meaningful connections with professionals in various fields, fostering mentorship opportunities and facilitating career pathway guidance, and would enable LUMIN to provide comprehensive support beyond middle school.
