When the governor halted all construction across Pennsylvania and supply chains froze up, the renovation of Catalyst’s depression-era school building was significantly delayed. Over a weekend, without permission, they opened a learning center for families in a closed hotel, with kindergarteners in the ballroom, and first graders in the hotel restaurant area and offered distance learning to all of their scholars. After they were able to move into their renovated building in September, 2020, there was no disruption to learning. While the Pittsburgh Public Schools were unable to offer any in-person learning, they were the only public elementary school providing five days a week of in-person learning in Pittsburgh in the 2020-2021 school year despite it being its first year of operations.
