Join The Yass Prize family and become part of the most important movement today
Last week, The Yass Prize was in full force in Austin, Texas. The nation’s leading education and civil rights advocates honored Dr. Howard Fuller for 60 years of advancing the rights of Black and Brown children to have education freedom, and the opportunities to be educated, free from oppressive government structures or people prescribing one, confining path for children.
It was a tough message for a tough issue, and the right one for today.
“The fight has never been about school choice. It’s about who has it,” Dr. Fuller said. And we all need to stretch ourselves and get out of our comfort zones to change that reality, no matter what it takes.
The Freedom Coalition for Charter Schools (FCCS) hosted the event. Fuller founded the Coalition, dedicated to all education options, during the last presidential election to put charter schools on the agenda of the Democratic Party. The event was the culmination of the National Charter School Conference, which has increasingly given life to more and more education innovators fighting for justice and excellence for all kids.
Cris Gullacy-Worrell of Oakmont Education, The Yass Prize finalist and FCCS board member, introduced Dr. Fuller during the event. She said Dr. Fuller taught her that everyone has the power to create change.
“Dr. Fuller’s superpower is bringing the right people to the right place at the right time and showing us the value of our stories through our struggles.”
